Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. One study suggests that 90% of cats greater than 12 years of age have evidence of osteoarthritis and with such high numbers being suggested, it is likely that osteoarthritis is under-diagnosed in cats.

Some clinical signs of osteoarthritis are:

  • Decreased willingness and ability to jump up and down
  • Changes in interaction with owners
  • Reduced grooming or over-grooming a painful joint
  • Lameness (limp, stiffness, abnormal posture)
  • Changes in bathroom habits
  • Changes in eating habits

NSFP doctors and technicians can help in the diagnosis of osteoarthritis by guiding you through a questionnaire focusing on changes in the behavior and lifestyle of your cat. There are many rehabilitation options offered at North Shore Family Pet that can benefit your cat dealing with osteoarthritis. Working with our doctors and rehab specialist, we will find the best option for you and your cat.

A 2011 study by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention found that greater than 50% of cats in the United States were either obese or overweight. Quantitatively, obesity is generally defined as exceeding ideal body weight by 15% to 20% or more. The resulting obesity predisposes cats to a number of medical conditions, as well as an increased risk for orthopedic disease. Excess weight also contributes to the development of musculoskeletal diseases and places excessive strain on joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, thus aggravating existing health problems. Even losing a small amount of weight is incredibly beneficial for cats.

Rehabilitation services are available at North Shore Family Pet to help your cat get back to their normal selves.
